“Music is safe in Ashbourne”

The original meetings surrounding the new Anthem for Ashbourne were held in late 2018 and were widely attended.

By June 2019 some local musicians got together to try make it happen. Fortunately for all of us, during the intervening months in early 2019, Ashbourne Musician Siubhan Ní Ghriofa had written a fabulous tune for the Anthem and then, between June and September, the working group of Siubhan and other Ashbourne musicians Ian Jenkinson, Giovanna Feeley and Ephrem Feeley, collaborated together to modify and add lyrics for the final version of “Ashbourne Mo Bhaile”.

An arrangement of the song for piano, voice, violin, tin whistle and bodhran was then recorded in November.

The melody is extremely infectious, while the lyrics reflect the history of our Village and how it has developed into an all inclusive, family-friendly environment for all to enjoy.

The lyrics also acknowledge that our Village was named after Frederick Bourne, while it also makes reference to the Kings of Tara and Thomas Ashe who headed up the Battle of Ashbourne.

The recording will be distributed to all Schools in Ashbourne so that the students can learn ” Ashbourne Mo Bhaile” and we look forward to hearing many renditions of the ‘Ashbourne Anthem’ throughout 2020 and beyond.

Lyrics:

Ashbourne Mo Bhaile
Verse 1:
Once a drive through tiny town, where folk would rest for just a while
All our lives have led us here, to this town in County Meath
Where laughter and love abound

Chorus
Ashbourne mo bhaile, two hundred years and more
May you always be, here for you and me
The Ashbourne we all call home

Verse 2
Steeped in lore of Tara’s Kings, with freedom fought for years ago
Now in playgrounds children play, And they dream their days away
A village that grows and grows

Chorus
Instrumental Solo
Verse 3
Running down Ned Nultys Lane, with fields of green and country air
Frederick Bourne who named our town, Thomas Ashe who fought our ground
Our hometown for evermore

Repeat Chorus
Ashbourne mo bhaile, two hundred years and more
May you always be, here for you and me
The Ashbourne we all call home
May you always be, here for you and me,
The Ashbourne we all call home
(End)
